From insects to animals, pests come in all shapes and sizes, some look unpleasant, but most are harmless. However, there are a few pests that can cause more than a nuisance and these should be dealt with as they can be a risk to your health. • What should I do?

  If you notice a Pest Control problem, the earlier it is dealt with the better. We do not offer Pest Control Services but there are qualified service providers in the area. Many household pests can be dealt with by using the humane traps and chemicals available in the shops, but sometimes it is advisable to call in the experts to solve a persistent problem. If you require professional help you should use the internet, trade or business directory to find a suitably qualified service. It is advisable to get more than one quote and to check that the company undertaking the work is competent.

• What can the Council do for me?

  Although Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council do not provide any form of pest control treatment such as the laying of bait or traps; if you are experiencing a pest problem we can provide advice on the following:

  • Identification of the pest species and an indication of the extent of the problem
  • The control treatment best suited to the type of pest and the area in which it is found
  • Cleaning practices and improvements in housekeeping to minimise the attraction of pests
  • Proofing measures which may be carried out during and after eradication of the pest.

Statutory action can also be taken against owner(s) or occupier(s) that fail to take adequate preventative measures to stop their properties becoming infested with rats or mice.
