Centenary In An Instant

Calling all amateur and professional photographers! We are challenging you to capture photographs that capture the spirit of the Northern Ireland Centenary.

Supported by the Northern Ireland Office’s Shared History Fund through the National Lottery Heritage Fund

As part of our Northern Ireland Centenary programme, we are delighted to be launching Centenary In An Instant – an online photography competition, challenging residents to capture photographs that embody the unique spirit of our people and place shaped over the past 100 years.

Photographs should be submitted under two main themes – Our People and Our Place. However, we are open to every interpretation of these themes, and hope that you will allow your imagination and creativity to run free. Is there a location that brings back nostalgia for your childhood? Is there one person that stands out to you when you think of our part of NI? Capture it and share it with us for the chance to be featured in an exhibition, taking place at the end of 2021.

Our People

We believe that people make places and we’re challenging you to reflect this in your photography. Have you taken a photo that captures the essence of the people of Our Borough and their quintessential Northern Irish quirks?

From sportspeople to familiar faces, we welcome photographs of any individual or group who you believe represent the spirit of our people. Ideas include (but are by no means limited to):

  • A photo of your local sports coach in action
  • A photograph depicting the friendly neighbourhood lollipop man, who has guided schoolchildren safely across the roads for many years
  • The local bar man, a familiar face to many
  • A group of people enjoying the beauty of our Borough, and encapsulating the spirit of Northern Ireland
Our Place

Our Borough is steeped in history over the past 100 years – can you capture the spirit of Northern Ireland in a photograph of our Borough? We are seeking photographs that reflect ‘Our Place’, including the architecture, the natural beauty, iconic landmarks, and locations with a story to tell. Need some inspiration? Here are a few ideas to inspire you, but we hope you will make this challenge your own:

  • A run-down shop that was once brimming with character and tales of years gone by
  • Photographs of interesting architecture or public art within the Borough
  • A photograph of your favourite landscape, forest trail or walking route within the Borough
  • Photographs that capture the heritage of Antrim and Newtownabbey, particularly over the last 100 years
