Book of Condolence for Councillor Paul Hamill

Extending my heartfelt sympathy to Paul’s wife Ruth, his daughters Grace and Sarah and the family circle. Paul was my friend and colleague. He was highly respected by all those he befriended, comforted and served throughout his life.                                             

Paul was so much more than a party colleague – he was a great friend.  Nothing was too much trouble and he always went the extra mile to help anyone in need.  Paul was a real people person with a fabulous sense of humour who faithfully served the community and I know he will be missed by all who knew him.  I extend my condolences to his wife Ruth, daughters and entire family circle.

Councillor Hamill was a pleasure to work with particularly during his Mayoral year. On behalf of all the staff of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council we extend our heartfelt sympathy to Ruth, his children Grace and Sarah, to his mum, sister, extended family and friends. Councillor Hamill insisted he be addressed as Paul and was always very appreciative of Council staff.

He will be greatly missed by everyone.

We are utterly heartbroken at the loss of our dear friend and colleague. Paul had the unique ability to bring out the best in us all and worked to serve everyone in our community. We will miss that infectious smile, good humour and unwavering loyalty. 

We hold his family in our hearts and trust and pray that almighty God, the greatest of comforters, will be with his entire family circle at this difficult time.

Paul gave so much to the people he served and will be sadly missed by all.

Paul was always a pleasure to work with both inside and outside our committee work, he was a genuinely good person. Paul worked for everyone and was very highly thought of. His commitment to the residents of Antrim and Newtownabbey was demonstrated widely in his term as Mayor. The SDLP thoughts and prayers are with Ruth, his daughters Grace and Sarah, his family circle and his DUP colleagues.

He will be missed by everyone on Antrim and Newtownabbey Council. Rest in Peace Paul.

So so sad and shocked to lose our esteemed colleague so young and so suddenly. He was a lovely guy who always had a smile and a friendly word for all. A passionate family man was so proud of his beloved children. My heart goes out to Ruth, the girls his mum and the wider family and friends. I was so sorry to learn of Paul’s passing. He was always ready with a welcoming smile and friendly disposition. Politics didn’t matter if it served the interests of the community. We spent time together at the Somme several years ago. I enjoyed his company and his keen sense of humour. As I said when we learnt of this sad news he was one of the genuinely nice guys in local politics.

Passing on my Sincere sympathies to Ruth Sarah and Grace, Paul was a real gentleman and will be greatly missed within our group. Paul was a true friend to us all. Safe in the arms of Jesus.

I wish to offer my Deepest Condolences to Ruth, Sarah, Grace and family on the passing of Paul. I have known Paul both outside council and as a fellow Macedon Councillor and his shock passing will be felt across the Borough. Paul was deeply involved in the community and will be greatly missed.

He was always the first person to offer encouragement and he never failed to make me laugh with his eye-rolls and eyebrow raises across the chamber in disagreement with the unfortunate speaker. Paul was a great character; friendly and approachable, trustworthy and dependable. He had a massive heart for others which was evidenced in all that he did. I have truly lost a good friend and ally. What a loss to. He was such a great guy to have on your side, always at the end of the phone when we needed his help ( as residents in Newtownabbey ). A man who had so much kindness and solved problems for people he didn't even know.. he went the extra mile when we needed help. I am very sorry to hear of Councillor Hamills passing and I will pray for his family at this very difficult time. Councillor Hamill was very welcoming to me when I first took up post in Valley Leisure Centre and he continued to offer me assistance whenever I needed help with local matters. I was privileged to be Paul's PA during his Mayoral year and got to know him very well during this time. He was a perfect gentleman and always so appreciative of Council staff. He served this Borough with distinction in so many different ways and I am greatly saddened to hear of his passing , much too young. When Paul was Mayor he hosted our company section boys along with Ballylinney company at Mosley Mill and gave us a tour . Dedicated to Boy’s Brigade and the “Advancement of Christ’s Kingdom”.

Vivien and I are shocked and saddened to hear of Paul’s death and we extend our deepest sympathies to all of his family. We knew Paul as a pupil (of Rathcoole Secondary), as Pastor who willingly supported our pupils in Newtownabbey Community High and as BOG member of the same school where I, and others benefited from his support. I will remember Paul as a true gentlemen, exemplifying Christian qualities that many of us can only aspire to.

Through my work at the University I met Paul on a number of occasions. He was always an enthusiastic supporter of progress in others - whether an individual or an organisation. He had a clear passion for the many diverse aspects of the Borough, its people and beyond. A good friend to the University and our students - he was unassuming, enthusiastic, and very well respected. I would like to extend my personal condolences to his wife Ruth, his daughters, and his entire family circle.

My sincerest condolences to Paul's family. Paul was an absolute gentleman and gracious to all those who knew him. I knew Paul outside of the public sphere; as he sought to teach others and share the truth from God. I pray that God's love will comfort his family now and in the days ahead.

Paul was a great joy to be around. My East Belfast colleagues always appreciated his kind demeanour, wisdom and wit when we gathered together. Councillor Hamill was very welcoming to me when I first took up post in Council in 2017. He was Mayor at the time, and was always a happy and reassuring face to offer support or assistance when needed. He was a very genuine and kind person; my thoughts are with his wife, children and family circle at this time.

So sorry on the loss of Paul. Great memories at the 16th Newtownabbey, boys brigade the time he for us lost in the mournes. Great man and he will be sadly missed.

I worked with Paul at the Dunanney Centre. We were quite different but he was someone I trusted and knew as a valuable critical friend. He was a wise and calm voice, particularly in times of challenge and frustration- there were many! I am so shocked by his death, he was such a vibrant person and I've thought of him often over the years, he was the kind of person NI needs. My thoughts are with Ruth and family.

I was deeply saddened when I heard of Pauls' passing. In life he lived honorably and justly in all of his dealings very much in line with Philipians 4 v8. I have felt and been enriched having known Paul as will many who have worked with him and enjoyed his sense of humor and fun. A sad loss to his lovely family and the community he served faithfully.

Paco as I always knew him was a kind and energetic worker who had a strong conviction in everything he did. Last time I saw Paul was as he gave out the prizes at the Battalion Athletics Competition in his roll as Mayor, I think he was also instrumental in getting us the venue as we struggled that year. My heart is saddened to read of the passing of Paul. I met him a few years ago at a Boys Brigade KGVI presentation evening where Paul spoke words of encouragement to the young new BB leaders and then presented the awards. Although that was the first time I met Paul I went home that evening with the feeling that Paul had been a lifelong friend. A wonderful man of God whom I had the privilege of knowing, if only too briefly.

Paul was a good friend from BCM Rathcoole and a member of 16th Newtownabbey Boys' Brigade. Paul was always willing to help with anything ask of him. Lovely memories of Paul speaking at NEWTOWNABBEY Disabled Christians Fellowship and the. when I sang at the Harvest services in Rathcoole. A sincere man whose faith in the Lord Jesus shone in his life and his work with others. Love and prayers to his wife and family.

I am so sorry to hear about Paul's passing - he was a humble servant and loved Jesus. He hosted an OM Team from theLogos Hope ship a couple of years ago for breakfast at Corr's Corner and afterwards in the Mayor's Parlour. The team thoroughly enjoyed the visit and pass on their condolences too. Paul Hamill was a man who was very generous with his time. He had time for everyone who needed to speak to him and time for those from all walks of life. The young and old,the rich and poor, those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and those who dont. I am terribly saddened by this news. I first met Paul in 2017 and from our very first meeting I felt like we were lifelong friends. From what I could see, he treated everyone that way and had a generous and kind soul. The world has lost one of the good guys. My condolences to his wife Ruth and his two daughters.

Paul was a dear friend and brother in the Lord. Praying for God's strength and comfort for Ruth, Grace and Sarah.

I did not know Paul personally. But when I was up in Mossley Mill one day registering the birth of my daughter. Paul who was Mayor at the time congratulated myself and my partner on the birth of our daughter and even took our photo for us outside the building. He even went as far to put his chain around the carry cot of my daughter for us to take some pictures. It’s a very fond memory. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Paul was a gentleman and a gentle soul. I had the privilege of knowing him man and boy. Such a loss. But he has been called home. Such sorrow for all those left grind. Especially his wife, two girls and all his family. We don’t know what the future holds but we know who holds the future.

I am so sorry to hear of the sad passing of Councillor Paul Hamill.As a family we knew him both through work and personal life. Paul was always a very approachable and pleasant man. I only met Paul once at an event at Mossley mill. Ruth & myself worked as classroom assistants in a local primary school while he was Lord Mayor. I went with my class to a Young enterprise event at Mossley Mill and the kids were so impressed that Mrs Hamills husband was Lord Mayor. My heart is breaking for Ruth & the girls. Praying for comfort for them

I had the pleasure of meeting Paul a number of times while directing a few shows with his very talented daughters. He was always so supportive of the work we did at Uplift and was a great supporter of the arts. My thoughts and prayers are with all the family. A remarkable man and he will be missed.

Paul Hamill was a man who was small in stature but with a big personality and a big heart. His heart belonged to the Saviour and was drawn to those around. It was my privilege to have him in Abbots Cross when I was the minister and it was a real honour to be his chaplain during his Mayoral year. I feel a deep sadness at his passing, and sorrow for his family to whom Valerie and I send love and sympathy. “Blessed are those who die in the Lord.”

So very saddened to hear of Paul’s passing. The tributes I have seen to date are so true - having worked alongside him a few years ago, I knew him to be a genuinely nice man who cared - and a deeply committed Christian. I have had the pleasure to meet Paul a few times at the Dunanney Centre in Rathcoole, he was a very pleasant and helpful man. He was very involved with the community groups. I remember days in youth groups with Paul very fondly. Will be keeping Ruth and their precious children in my prayers...may they receive the strength needed at this time.

Still find it hard to believe that Paul is no longer with us as he was so accessible as a friend and colleague. I count it a privilege to have had him as a friend and a Brother in Christ. He had so much more to give and I pass on my love and condolences to Ruth, Grace, Sarah and the family.

It is so sad and hard to comprehend that we will not see Paul again this side of glory. My heart goes out to Ruth and Paul's precious wee girls Grace and Sarah. I pray that God will wrap this arms around them and hold them tight.

I met Paul (Paco) through school then went on to spend many great memories with him at the BCM growing up in Rathcoole, he was kind and compassionate about everyone and everything nobody would have one bad word to say about him, I was honoured that while he was a missionary at the BCM he dedicated my twin boys a service I will always remember.. In 2017, our Sister Cities relationship brought me to Northern Ireland, Paul was serving as Mayor and I found him to be a very friendly and kind man. I very much enjoyed getting to know him.

I will remember him as a family man and a genuine man of faith and integrity. Paul showed respect and compassion to council staff. Paul’s eyes lit up when he talked about Ruth and the girls. I know how important Paul’s faith was to him. I hope that is a comfort to his family and that they can feel God’s presence supporting them at this time. Love and prayers to Ruth, Sarah and Grace.

I am saddened to learn of Paul’s death . As a family we will uphold the Hamill family in prayer as they mourn their loss . I knew Paul to be a man of principle and most importantly a man of God . We may wonder at God’s providence at this time but hope we will be thankful for Paul’s life .

I worked in Member Services in Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council when Paul was Mayor and it was such a pleasure to work for him.
