Dusky Flanks Fluid Bow

An exhibition by Susan Hughes

Thu, 5 March - Sat, 28 March
10.00AM - 5.00PM
Theatre at the Mill
Flax Gallery

Adm: FREE

Hughes has always been drawn to coastal regions, islands and bird sanctuaries for visual and musical stimuli. Witnessing first hand the impact of the climate crisis on the breeding bird populations of Ireland has led her to focus on her father as subject. Dermot Hughes is a highly experienced birdwatcher: dedicated listener, watcher and meticulous recorder. He is fine tuned to the quiet, devastating losses and changes in our natural environment while simultaneously garnering sustained fulfilment from his practice.

There is an unintentional beauty and poeticism in the rhythmic detailing of quantitative bird data found in Dermot’s birdwatching field notebooks from the 1970s and 1980s which is celebrated in Hughes’ work in this show. Extracts of text are isolated, abstracted and juxtaposed with the artists’ own words to create a new narrative.

There will be a birdwatching walk tying in with the exhibition with Dermot Hughes on Saturday 14th March, 2-3pm. Binoculars and tea/coffee provided.
Admission free.
Meet in the Flax Gallery at Theatre at the Mill lower foyer at 2pm.
