Politics, high society, drama and tragedy in the fight against home rule feature in a brand new play ‘Carson and the Lady’.
Sat, 4 September
8.00PM - 10.00PM
Antrim Castle Gardens
Based on actual events of the time, Carson and The Lady is a drama set in the stately home of Lord and Lady Massereene in Antrim Castle Gardens in the years prior to and shortly after the creation of Northern Ireland in May 1921. Audiences will spend an evening in the company of socialite beauty Lady Massereene, her close friend and political hero Sir Edward Carson, Lady Massereene's mystical companion Evan Morgan and household servants Ethel Gillingham and Thomas Ballentine, two young lovers from across the political divide. The play follows the story of these historical characters as their lives and fortunes intertwine against the backdrop of some of the most remarkable political developments in a momentous and turbulent period of Irish history.
Carson and the Lady is a new work from Michael Cameron, writer of the award-winning play ‘Ruby!’ which opened in 2019 to critical acclaim and commercial success. Directed by Colm G Doran and inspired by the writing of historical biographer Lyndsy Spence.
This performance takes place outside in the beautiful Antrim Castle Gardens and will go ahead in all weathers. Seating will be provided, however, you are welcome to bring along your picnic and preferred low back seating.
Following the announcement from Stormont on the 13 August that the legal requirement for social distancing no longer exists for outdoor events. Seats can be booked individually however these seats will not be socially distanced, seats will continue to be arranged in socially distanced blocks of four as advertised on our website.
