Welcoming the decision, Committee Chairman, Alderman Philip Brett said; “this development represents a significant investment and vote of confidence in Mallusk, a sought after area with a high demand for housing, and it is great to offer more options for future residents. The scheme represents an overall investment in excess of £30 million by the developer and will bring forward some 60-80 construction jobs.
“The Committee particularly welcomes the decision of the developer to bring forward a revised scheme for this site, which reduced the density of housing proposed from an earlier proposal, and the engagement that took place with the community in June 2019 to address local concerns.”
The approved development will provide a series of local improvements to the surrounding highway network including a staggered crossroads with The Poplars estate, a pedestrian footway along the site frontage and a controlled pedestrian crossing point between the two bus stop facilities on the Mallusk Road to the east of the junction with Park Road. To encourage the use of public transport over the private car travel cards are also to be provided to the occupiers of each of the proposed new residential units.
In addition, it is a requirement of the permission that no development takes place until relevant improvement works are undertaken to the nearby Boghill Dam that will benefit all properties downstream by reducing the flood risk from the dam.
The development will also deliver a new equipped children’s play area and the developer has committed to working with the Council to agree a location that will benefit both proposed and existing residents.
Alderman Brett concluded “I am pleased with the plans for this new development which will help deliver local infrastructure improvements for the Mallusk area and provide a high quality development with a wide variety of house types for new family housing in a spacious landscaped layout with existing mature tree planting retained.”
He added “the application was processed in just over 6 months and demonstrates the Council’s continued commitment to work positively with the development industry and turn around major applications speedily.”
