Truly Scrumptious!

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council was delighted to hear of a local business rising to the top in a UK awards competition, as we continue to encourage everyone to ‘Shop Local and Discover what’s on your doorstep’.

The artisan gelato business, based within the Paper Shop in Ballyclare, Co Antrim, True Gelato, scooped an armful of awards at the recent National Ice Cream Competition 2020.

This prestigious competition is organised by the Ice Cream Alliance Ltd, which is the UK trade association for ice cream manufacturers and retailers and the only membership trade association for the Ice Cream Industry in the UK.

The local company, run by brothers Karl and Ryan Wilson, flourished by coming first in the Best Newcomer Category with their Vanilla flavour, a hard fought category entered by those who have been in business up to 3 years.

Fighting off stiff competition from long established and revered names in the Ice Cream industry, True Gelato also won an excellence diploma for their Honeycomb flavour, and were also successful in securing awards for their Mango Sorbet; Raspberry and White chocolate; Chocolate and Snickers flavours.

Visiting the award winning business, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth commented, ‘This proves once again what a wealth of quality and entrepreneurship we have within our business community.  Karl and Ryan Wilson are manufacturing this award winning Gelato here in their premises in Ballyclare, having diversified into this new strand for their business.  As our high streets continue to change and businesses face ongoing challenges, people are having to develop new product lines or experiences which aim to set them apart.  I wish Karl and Ryan every continued success with True Gelato.’

Shopping local not only supports our local businesses but retains wealth locally, creates jobs and provides training opportunities.  With so much quality on our doorsteps we can enjoy the best of produce, service and goods whilst also supporting the local economy.
