Antrim and Newtownabbey Sports Awards 2019

Theatre at The Mill was awash with glitz and glamour last night as Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council hosted the 2019 Antrim and Newtownabbey Sports Awards. Hosted by broadcaster, video journalist and sports presenter, Denise Watson, this prestigious sporting event celebrates the success, commitment and dedication from the athletes and sports representatives within the Borough.

Hosted by broadcaster, video journalist and sports presenter, Denise Watson, this prestigious sporting event celebrates the success, commitment and dedication from the athletes and sports representatives within the Borough. 

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth commented, “The Antrim and Newtownabbey Sports Awards showcase the talent and commitment from the Borough’s sports stars, coaches and volunteers. Sport is a hugely important aspect of life which keeps people healthy, engaged, and provides all involved with a great sense of achievement and purpose. I would like to congratulate all nominees across each of the categories and in particular, the winners of each of the categories, well done!”

The 2019 Antrim and Newtownabbey Sports Awards winners are:
  • Club of the Year: Mallusk Harriers
  • Junior Team of the Year: Antrim Phoenix Trampoline Club
  • Senior Team of the Year: Old Bleach Veterans Bowling Team
  • Coach of the Year: Ashleigh Berry
  • Sports Person of the Year with a Disability: Gareth McNeilly
  • Services to Sport: Michael Maguire
  • Roll of Honour (Posthumous Award): George Glasgow
  • Janet Parkinson Award: Michaela Walsh
  • Junior Sports Person of the Year Dr Jonathan Rea MBE Award: Tom McKibbin (this award has been gifted by five time world superbike champion, Dr Jonathan Rea, MBE)
  • Adult Sports Person of the Year: Dr Jonathan Rea MBE
