Slow Cooker sets supporting the vulnerable

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has supported more than 50 households across the Borough, identified with vulnerable members, with slow cooker starter kits.

The kits include a slow cooker, cookbook and recipe ingredients for two meals and are designed to provide a more sustainable option for those households who have been shielding to make healthy meals.

The scheme has been developed alongside the Northern Healthy Lifestyle Partnership, funded by the Northern Health and Social Care Trust and the Public Health Agency, supported by Henderson Retail.

Commenting on the scheme, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery said;

“Throughout the pandemic, we delivered over 18,000 food parcels across the Borough to those who were shielding or in need. We are committed to supporting people in practical ways through these unprecedented times and I am delighted we are able to further support some of these families with these kits. This scheme is a great example of how working together with other agencies can enhance the lives of our residents.”

Michelle Donnelly from Henderson Retail added;

“Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our store teams have been doing all they can for their local communities, from providing home deliveries to the isolated and vulnerable, to helping foodbanks, charities and community groups. Providing these ingredients for the starter kits means those who still continue to shield can still enjoy a fresh, hot meal without any hassle. The slow cooker initiative is a fantastic idea and we’re very proud to be part of it.”
