A new campaign launched by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in partnership with the PSNI, Chamber of Commerce and local retailers, highlights the significance of shopping local in the run up to Christmas and in particular, the importance of customer safety. The COVID Aware Campaign helps customers know participating businesses are putting necessary measures in place to ensure their safety.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery said, “I am delighted Council is working in partnership with the various stakeholders, to help encourage people to shop local by giving them the reassurance that it is a safe place to shop. Businesses have been severely impacted by COVID-19 and customer confidence is central to ensuring the sustainability of businesses for the local economy. The Council will continue to support businesses during these challenging economic times and as the restrictions are eased, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to shop local when possible to give these businesses a helping hand in what has been a difficult time.”

District Commander Superintendent Sue Steen said: “In support of the Covid Aware Campaign we will be continuing our high visibility patrols across our town centres and working with our partners in retail and hospitality to provide safe spaces for everyone. I would encourage people to follow the guidance from the Northern Ireland Executive and play their part to prevent the spread of Covid 19. While some restrictions will be lifted there are still others in place and we will continue to encourage everyone to do the right thing.”

Iain Patterson, Chair of Chamber of Commerce commented, “This is a vitally important time, as Christmas brings in major income which supports businesses throughout the year. We want our customers to feel confident whilst shopping and eating and this Covid Aware accreditation mark will support this.”

To gain the accreditation, retailers must comply with a number of criteria and be verified by the Council’s Environmental Health team. If you are a business who would like to apply for the accreditation or would like more information, visit antrimandnewtonwabbey.gov.uk/CovidAware
