Mayor welcomes expansion of School Uniform Recycling Scheme

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey has welcomed the expansion of a number of community school uniform recycling schemes across the Borough.

School uniforms can be very costly and given how quickly children grow they often need replaced and a perfectly good uniform could go to waste, often landfill just because it doesn’t fit any more.

Seven school uniform recycling schemes are available across each of our district electoral areas (DEA) where you can drop off a school uniform that is no longer required from Monday 20 – Friday 24 July.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth said “Community groups have shown great leadership with a number of these schemes already in place. I’m pleased that the Council has now helped build upon this work which not only supports families in these uncertain times, but by recycling a perfectly good uniform we are also helping the environment. The expansion of these schemes across our Borough was greatly enabled by our collaboration with community groups and volunteers during COVID-19 and further evidence of the great community spirit out there.”

School uniforms can last a very long time if cared for and laundered using eco-friendly products. So if you have a child who has grown out of their uniform or no longer needs it why not do your bit for the environment and pass on your old uniform to one of these community recycling schemes. As well as donating a uniform you can also pick up a uniform at any of the assigned location points from Monday 3 – Friday 7 August.

To adhere with social distancing all collections must be arranged in advance by contacting your chosen location. Full details can be found on our website; antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/uniform.
