Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has agreed to restore further waste and recycling services across the Borough.

Household Recycling Centres

Whilst residents have been able to use the Household Recycling Centres again since early May, there has been a limitation on the streams of waste that can be accepted due to social distancing. Council has been working with external contractors who remove and process the materials from the sites and from Wednesday 1 July, all five sites will be fully operational, accepting all types of waste.

In order to maintain social distancing on site and to manage the impact of traffic, an appointment system will remain in place for Crumlin and O’Neill Road Recycling Centres.

Bulky Waste Collection Service

Due to Covid-19, the Council’s bulky waste collection service was suspended and will resume on a phased basis from Wednesday 1 July. Phase 1 will include the collection of large white electrical items (e.g. fridge, freezer, washing machine. With effect from Monday 20 July, phase 2 will also include the collection of soft furnishings (e.g. sofa, bed, mattress). Phase 3 will be effective from Monday 3 August, with the full service restored and all normal bulky items collected up to a maximum of three items per household.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council Alderman John Smyth said;

“I am pleased that the restrictions on waste streams at our Recycling Centres will soon be lifted and residents will be able to recycle and dispose of these additional materials. I know how popular our bulky waste service is so it is great to see this coming back into operation again and I would ask residents to be patient as our crews work hard to fulfil the demand for this service. I would like to thank the public once again for their co-operation during these unprecedented times and assure everyone that we are continually working to restore our services right across the Borough.”
