Mayor calls for ‘calm heads and community spirit’

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth, has urged residents across the Borough to be calm and listen to the advice of the medical authorities in response to the COVID-19 public health situation.

Alderman Smyth said: “Of course concern and fears are understandable. However, in times of adversity, it is vital that as a community we are unified in our spirit and response.

“People should heed the important Public Health Agency advice to slow and reduce the spread of the Coronavirus, taking particular precautions around those more vulnerable groups such as the elderly or those with underlying health conditions.”

The Mayor also urged people to look out for those who may need particular support during the situation. “There have been some fantastic examples of sporting, cultural, community and church groups coming together to offer assistance with shopping or other support. That is the spirit of unity that will help us get through this difficulty.”

“We also need to show calm and avoid panic buying. I know retailers both large and small across our Borough are making every effort to keep shelves stocked, but panic buying only heightens fear, and there is simply no need for it.”

“I pay tribute to the outstanding work of those who are on the frontline during this period, particularly our health-service staff and those caring for the vulnerable. Every single one is playing an important role, whether that is keeping facilities clean and controlling infection, or those making vital medical decisions.”
