Mayor thanks Royal British Legion for responsible leadership

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey has thanked the Royal British Legion for their leadership and responsible approach to Remembrance events this year.

Attending the launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal fundraiser, Mayor Cllr Jim Montgomery said,

“Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day are events deeply woven in the fabric of our nation. They are opportunities for us to come together, in solemn recognition and remembrance of the sacrifices that service men and women both paid, and endured the legacy of.

Therefore, for the Royal British Legion to ask branches to scale back events that have observed hallowed traditions for almost a century is no small matter, and I thank them sincerely.

It is a very responsible approach to seek to minimise attendance at these events. I would urge those who may normally seek to attend parades or services to reflect on this call, and respect the leadership shown.

COVID19 has an impact on every walk of life, but we must but remember that if we do the right thing, better days are ahead of us. In the words of that wartime classic, echoed by Her Majesty The Queen in her most recent national address, ‘We will meet again’.”
