Council will light up their three civic buildings yellow on Friday 25 September in support of the Marie Cure ‘light up the night' campaign.

The ‘light up the night’ initiative was formed in lieu of the Marie Cure’s Twilight Walk which usually takes place in September. Each year approx. 2,000 people take part in this walk in memory of loved ones but like so many events this year, it has been cancelled.

Instead, Marie Cure are appealing to people across Northern Ireland to hold their own little Twilight Walk in September and ‘light up the night’ in memory of loved ones and to support the charity’s work.

Over 35,000 people have been affect by a bereavement in Northern Ireland since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people have missed out on the opportunity to say goodbye, grieve and support each other as they normally would.  Twilight Walk is a time for us to remember those who have died and raise money to support anyone facing the end of life in Northern Ireland.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery said “Marie Curie provide a lifeline support for people living with a terminal illness and their families. Although we can’t join together for the walk this year, we can show support for those who have been bereaved by having our own twilight walks and adding to the thousands of people who will be lighting up the night to remember loved ones. I would urge the public to get behind this campaign, as with so many, charities are experiencing a downturn in their fundraising as a result of this pandemic and they need your support more now than ever.”
