Council lights up green to support Recycle Week 2020

Council will be lighting up its three civic buildings on Wednesday 23 September to show its support for Recycle Week 2020.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is once again lending its support to Recycle Week. Now in its 17th year, the theme for this year’s campaign is to thank residents for continuing to recycle despite all that has happened throughout 2020.

To celebrate the campaign, the Council will be lighting up its three civic buildings on Wednesday 23 September. Antrim Civic Centre, Mossley Mill and Ballyclare Town Hall will be lit up green to highlight the importance of recycling and show Council’s support for Recycling Week 2020.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery said;

“Thanks to our fantastic residents, we are currently recycling almost 57% of all household waste, making us one of the top recycling Councils in Northern Ireland. Sending waste to landfill costs significantly more than recycling it and so this week is an ideal time for residents to take a fresh look at their recycling habits and see what opportunities they have to recycle even more.”

Statistics released by Recycle Now show that through lockdown, Northern Ireland has become even more environmentally aware with 83% of households saying they ‘regularly recycle’.

Ian Garner, Head of WRAP NI said;

“It’s fantastic to see that despite everything that has been thrown at them this year, more people than ever in Antrim and Newtownabbey are taking responsibility for protecting the environment by choosing to recycle.”
