Disability Hub will improve access for all

Council secures funding for a new Disability Hub located at Antrim Castle Mall

A new Disability Hub has been launched within Antrim Castle Mall, providing free access to a range of mobility equipment.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council supported the delivery of this facility thanks to funding from the Department for Communities Access and Inclusion Programme which promotes a more inclusive society by enabling people with disabilities to fully participate in arts, cultural and active recreation activities.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery was pleased to launch the new service;

“This funding has enabled Council to purchase a number of mobility scooters which are housed centrally in Antrim Castle Mall, giving visitors access to the town centre and other cultural attractions such as Antrim Castle Gardens, Old Courthouse, Pogue’s Entry and Antrim Library.”

The Mayor continued;

“We are continually working to make our Council facilities and services more accessible for those with additional needs and this new Hub will ensure that all residents and visitors can access all that Antrim Town has to offer. We are grateful for the effective partnership working between Council and Antrim Castle Mall to successfully deliver this project.”

Gavin McBride, Department for Communities added;

“More than one in five people here have a disability and are often faced with limited opportunities to participate in activities that many of us take for granted. The Access and Inclusion Programme will help to remove the barriers that previously prevented their participation in arts, culture and active recreation activities. The Disability Hub provides opportunities that will help engage visitors with disabilities to visit Antrim town and provide them with confidence that facilities are available for their use.”

The Council has also benefitted from a number of other projects through the Access and Inclusion Programme including a disability trail at V36, a replacement sound system at Theatre at The Mill and new theatre doors at the Old Courthouse.
