In a fitting tribute on Holocaust Memorial Day, the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery, joined by Consul General of the Republic of Poland Mr Pawel Majewski, laid wreaths at the new Holocaust Memorial Site at Monkstown Jubilee Community Centre, in memory of the millions of people who lost their lives during the Holocaust.

Holocaust Memorial Day, 27 January, is the international day to remember the six million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery said “Holocaust Memorial Day is a time for the world to reflect on the atrocities carried out against six million Jewish men, women and children. The Holocaust was a defining period of the twentieth century, which undoubtedly changed the course of history. The Council is committed to ensuring the memory of those who lost their lives in the Holocaust is preserved for generations to come. I hope that the Holocaust Memorial site will offer solace to our Jewish community. We must all ‘Stand Together’ to promote and enjoy a peaceful and stable society where diversity is embraced and celebrated.”

Consul General of the Republic of Poland Mr Pawel Majewski added “As we come together to mark the Holocaust Memorial Day 2021 and the liberation of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, I am pleased to be here with the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council making strong commitment to remembering the victims of the Holocaust, alongside the millions of others killed under Nazi Persecution. It is our moral duty to acknowledge and remember all those who suffered and we have to make sure that it must never happen again.”

The Council commissioned The Holocaust Memorial, located in the Memorial Garden at Monkstown Jubilee Community Centre in 2020 through its Good Relations programme. The Council worked with a group of local residents to recreate the Holocaust Memorial flame within a bespoke mosaic. The flame is a symbol of light and the clasped hands signify unity, togetherness, solidarity, empathy and reaching out to fellow members of the human race.

Antrim Civic Centre, Ballyclare Town Hall and Mossley Mill will also light up purple this evening to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2021.
