New Sensory Garden for Hazelbank

A new sensory garden at Hazelbank Park has been officially opened by Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery.

Funded by the Department for Communities’ Access and Inclusion Programme, this £30,000 fully accessible garden features raised beds with plants designed to stimulate the senses, a sandpit area and seating. In the coming weeks, a range of sensory equipment will also be installed including wind chimes, stepping logs, balance beams, musical instruments and mirrors.

The Mayor commented;

“We are continually working to make our council facilities and services more accessible for those with additional needs and I am delighted to be able to open this new garden at Hazelbank Park.”

“Sensory gardens can be a very therapeutic and calming place, helping to improve physical fitness, health and mood. The location of the garden was carefully chosen, to ensure users could enjoy a tranquil experience in a quieter area within the popular park. The 2m wide path throughout the garden also ensures that those with mobility issues and wheelchair users can easily move through the site.”

Communities Minister, Deirdre Hargey said,

“My Department’s Access and Inclusion Programme is designed to help promote a more inclusive society by improving accessibility at arts, cultural and active recreation venues for people with disabilities who often have limited opportunities to participate in activities that many of us take for granted.

“I am aware of the many benefits that sensory gardens can provide particularly for children with learning difficulties and special needs and I welcome this addition to the facilities available at Hazelbank Park.”
