Protector of the Lough arrives in his new Home

The Sculpture represents Finn McCool, a popular mythological giant who had an enemy called Benandonner, also known as Red Giant, who lived in Scotland. Legend has it that Red Giant came to Northern Ireland to fight Finn McCool but was tricked into thinking Finn McCool was much bigger and stronger than him.  As the Red Giant ran back to Scotland, Finn scooped up a piece of earth from Antrim and threw it at his enemy. 

The hole left in the earth filled up with water and is known today as Lough Neagh! The earth missed Red Giant and remains in the middle of the two Countries which we now know as the Isle of Man!

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Billy Webb commented;

This impressive sculpture is an exciting attraction for our residents and visitors. It is particularly breath-taking in the evening when it is lit up beautifully against the shoreline.  This, along with our other digital plans for the area will grow our tourism offering bringing more visitors and supporting our local businesses.

Embracing the Giant Spirit, the eight metre tall sculpture is just the beginning of several exciting developments at Antrim Lough Shore. The Council have already announced plans to create a digital experience in line with our Tourism strategy.  Components will include bespoke virtual reality seasonal trails, taster sessions with local restaurants, festivals and guided tours.
