Tidy Randalstown to receive special tree as part of Queen’s Green Canopy

Tidy Randalstown is celebrating the news that it is to receive a special tree as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy ‘Tree of Trees’ initiative, in honour of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The inspirational group joins over 300 organisations from across the UK who were yesterday announced as recipients of these gifts in the Queen’s name, which are gifted in a pot embossed with Her Majesty’s cypher.

The tree will be presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mr David McCorkell KStJ on Thursday October 20, and will be planted at the entrance to the viaduct on New Street, Randalstown.

The tree will become part of the living legacy in honour of Her Majesty, joining over a million trees already planted across the UK as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative.

Helen Boyd, chairperson of Tidy Randalstown said the special gift recognises the important contribution that the volunteer organisation makes to the town.

She added:

“Tidy Randalstown volunteers are drawn from right across the community. They strive to protect and enhance the environment for the benefit of all, often using the natural world to improve health and wellbeing.

“Based on our flexible and supportive ethos, volunteers experience a strong sense of belonging and self-worth. As a result they feel empowered and are motivated to inspire others.

“We are delighted to receive this special tree, given in the Queen’s name. It will remind us to strive for a greener environment and will serve as an inspiration for tree planting in the future.”

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Alderman Stephen Ross said:

“I am thrilled that Tidy Randalstown is to receive this gift in honour of our late monarch

“The Queen’s Green Canopy is a great way to honour Her Majesty’s memory and the special tree will also serve as a reminder of the vital role that Tidy Randalstown plays in the local community.”

The Queen’s Green Canopy tree planting initiative was created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. It has now been extended to the end of the planting season in March 2023, to give people an opportunity to plant trees in honour of the Queen.
