Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Alderman Stephen Ross has paid tribute to Sam Magee MBE, former Chief Executive of legacy Antrim Borough Council, who sadly passed away at the weekend.

Mr Magee began his career with Antrim Council in 1971 and was appointed Chief Executive in 1973. Sam Magee was not only the youngest ever appointed Chief Executive but was also the longest serving with over 32 years’ service as Chief Executive,

Alderman Ross said:

“Sam Magee was instrumental in putting Antrim Town on the map, he worked tirelessly and travelled the globe to secure investment for our Borough. Sam will be sadly missed and on behalf of the Council, I want to extend my condolences to his wife Olive, children David, Judith and Carol and family circle at this difficult time.”

Mr Magee was originally from a farming background and went on to serve local Government for 44 years before his retirement in 2004 and was honoured with an MBE for his services to local government.

Sam was a great family man and he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Outside his family, his big interest was golf and he was often found playing at Allen park.
