Plastic Free July: A Small Step for a Greener World!

The convenience offered by single use plastics comes at a heavy cost to our planet. However, by making simple changes to our daily routines, we can make a substantial impact. Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is urging residents to take part in Plastic Free July and challenging them to eliminate one or more single use plastic items this month. The best way to reduce plastic pollution is to refuse, rethink and reduce single use plastics.

Easy ways you can make your July plastic free:

  • Buy loose fruits and vegetables or use reusable produce bags
  • Carry a reusable water bottle and refill at a water refill station
  • Avoid takeaway coffees or carry a reusable cup
  • Carry a reusable shopping bag
  • Use an alternative to cling film
  • Avoid single use plastic cutlery when eating outside the home.

The Council has also made ‘The Plastic Promise’, a pledge that Councils can make to reduce and phase out their use of single use plastics from day-to-day operations.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Mark Cooper commented, “Single use plastics have become a significant threat to our ecosystems, polluting our oceans, clogging our landfills and endangering wildlife. By embracing Plastic Free July we can be the catalyst for change. Small changes in our daily habits can lead to a significant reduction in plastic waste. Together we can foster a culture that values the long-term health of our environment over momentary convenience.”
