New Oak Tree at Macmillan Cancer Unit, Antrim Area Hospital is a Symbol of Strength

The Macmillan Unit at Antrim Area Hospital, along with its volunteers and staff, has recently joined forces with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council for the ‘One Million Trees’ Programme

In a collaborative effort, the Macmillan team, alongside the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman Stephen Ross, planted a majestic oak tree on the hospital grounds. This tree will serve as a powerful symbol of strength and endurance for the patients of the hospital.

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman Stephen Ross, said “The oak tree, known for its longevity and resilience, is a fitting symbol for the Macmillan Unit's patients, who are facing challenging health issues. I was delighted to be invited and to learn more about the incredible support and services of Macmillan. I hope this tree will stand as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all who pass by, a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”

Nicola McAleese, the Macmillan Volunteer Coordinator, expressed her delight at the Council's generous gift of a beautiful oak tree to the Macmillan Cancer Unit. “This powerful emblem represents the resilience and fortitude of those who have been affected by cancer and other terminal illnesses, reminding them of the hope that they possess. We fully appreciate the importance of planting trees, not only for the health of our planet but also for the well-being of our patients. Connecting with nature can have a positive impact on their mental and physical health.”

As the tree planting season draws to a close, the Macmillan Cancer Unit at Antrim Area Hospital along with over 40 schools and community groups throughout the Borough have planted oak trees on their premises in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II. This initiative is part of the Queen's Green Canopy project, aimed at encouraging tree planting to celebrate Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee.
