Antrim and Newtownabbey lights up for World Alzheimer’s Day

Antrim and Newtownabbey prides itself on being an inclusive Borough, with various initiatives, programmes and events for all. As part of this focus and to raise awareness for World Alzheimer’s Day, the Council will be lighting up Antrim Civic Centre, Ballyclare Town Hall and Mossley Mill purple. World Alzheimer's Day is a global opportunity to raise awareness, educate, encourage support of, and demystify dementia.

The light up comes just two weeks after welcoming back The Forget-Me-Notes, an inclusive singing group for older people and those living with dementia. This community singing group provides an open space for older people to come together and make new connections and friendships, with no previous singing experience necessary. The group is designed to be dementia-friendly and carers of those living with dementia are very welcome to come along.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Mark Cooper commented, “Dementia is one of the biggest challenges we face, with nearly 50 million people living with dementia worldwide. I am delighted the Council is showing support for World Alzheimer’s Day as well as organising the Forget-Me-Notes group for those with dementia. If you have a loved one or know of anyone who would enjoy this free class, I would encourage you to bring them along.”
