The Council invited nominations across several categories to highlight acts of kindness, creativity, and community spirit during this special time of year. With over 80 entries showcasing incredible efforts, we are delighted to announce this year’s winners:
Traditional Christmas Award - Recognising acts of goodwill during the festive period
Awarded to Kathy Wolff: Kathy, affectionately known as “Mrs Claus,” was honoured for her exceptional work within the community. From delighting children with storytelling sessions in local libraries to delivering afternoon teas and joy to deserving pensioners, Kathy’s surprise appearances at Christmas dinners throughout the Borough have spread happiness far and wide.
Light Up Award - For the Best Lit Town/Village/Street/Precinct
Awarded to Ballyclare Primary School: The school captured hearts with their spectacular “Not So Silent Night” Carol Service. Celebrating Christmas under the stars, the event featured enchanting performances by the school choir, community singing, and a beautifully lit avenue of Christmas trees.
The Reason for the Season Award - The most festive school, church, or community facility
Awarded to First Antrim Presbyterian Church: This church’s Christmas Tree Festival, held over four days, showcased over 30 beautifully decorated trees by local schools, businesses, and organisations. Their event also supported two local charities, Lough Neagh Rescue and Friends of the Cancer Centre, delivering the true meaning of Christmas.
The Making an Entrance Award - The best-dressed entrance feature or shop front
Awarded to McManus Hardware, Randalstown: They transformed their shopfront into a magical festive display, featuring family-focused scenes of Santa’s House and the North Pole. The display brought holiday spirit to all who visited Randalstown.
Special Category: Get Fit and Festive Award – For the best festive initiative, display, or event that promotes health and fitness
Awarded to Clare McIvor – Do It For You Fitness Programme: Clare was recognised for her efforts in keeping the community active during the festive season. From organising a Christmas Community Walk to offering motivating fitness opportunities, Clare has inspired many to stay healthy and festive.
Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree Award - Best programme of festive entertainment within a business or community setting
Awarded to L-AE School of Dance – Reindeer Ravers: The dance group wowed audiences with their “Reindeer Ravers” performances, delivering seven energetic shows at the Council’s Christmas Light Switch-On Events. Their fun and dynamic routines left a lasting impression on spectators.
Mayor’s Award - Most Outstanding Event – Chosen by the Mayor
Awarded to Mallusk Enterprise Park: The agency’s Christmas Market and Light Switch-On Event was a standout success. Bringing residents and businesses together, the event supported NI Children’s Hospice, Newtownabbey Foodbank, and Cash for Kids, spreading kindness and making a meaningful difference to children and families in need.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly, said “The Spirit of Christmas Awards showcase the incredible dedication and creativity within our community. I am inspired by the kindness and festive cheer displayed by each of our winners and nominees. Their efforts have made a real difference and helped make this Christmas extra special for so many.”
