Ballyearl Arts and Leisure Centre is competing to retain its title as the ‘Regional and National Centre of the Year’ at this year’s ukactive Awards for the second consecutive year.
Joe Hughes, a volunteer at the Valley Leisure Centre, has also been nominated for the 'Physical Hero of the Year' category for his unwavering dedication to his local community and valuable contributions in supporting people to stay active. Mr. Hughes will be competing in a public vote against seven other UK Activity Heroes.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly, said,
I’m delighted that Ballyearl Arts and Leisure Centre has been nominated as a finalist. As current reigning ukactive champions, it would be a great achievement for the centre if they could retain their title this year. The centre has become a health hub in the Borough, offering an incredible, affordable fitness package and best-in-class customer service experience, making them worthy winners. Volunteers are the backbone of our community, and I’d like to congratulate Joe Hughes for being shortlisted among the tough competition from all regions of the UK. His ability to inspire and teach people through the Live Long programme is improving the health of our residents, and I am extremely grateful that Joe has offered up his time and abilities to serve his local community.
