The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly, presented participants with their certificates and discussed the learning experiences of the group along with Richard Nicholl from the Department for Communities (DfC) Sign Language Team.
The Mayor said, “It was wonderful to hear that some of the frontline Council staff who participated in the course have been able to put their new skills to good use already in improving accessibility for the d/Deaf community to Council services in the Borough. I would encourage more staff to follow their example.”
Richard Nicholl from DfC, said; “I am delighted to celebrate the successful completion of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council’s pilot British Sign Language Level 1 course, funded by the Department for Communities as part of its continued promotion of sign language across society.”
“It has been encouraging to hear how learning British Sign Language has impacted on the students’ lives and the lives of those around them. I wish all the students every success as they continue their sign language journey.”
