The event, featuring Olympic athlete Ciara Mageean, focused on empowering female runners of all ages and fitness levels with vital tips for running safely during the dark winter months.
This workshop is part of the Council’s broader commitment to the Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) initiative, a seven-year programme aimed at tackling this pressing issue through community engagement and education.
The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly said,
“I am delighted the Council organised this empowering evening for local women, which demonstrates our collective commitment to Ending Violence Against Women and Girls. It was a pleasure to welcome two-time Olympian and 2024 European Championships Gold Medallist, Ciara Mageean to our Borough to inspire local runners and share her expert running knowledge.
“I would like to thank all of the expert guests sharing their wealth of health, nutrition, fitness, and safety. We hope it has inspired local women to further take an active role in their health and well-being, while feeling supported and safe in their journey.”
The event was hosted by Claire McCollum and included presentations from key experts, including representatives from the Antrim and Newtownabbey Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), Lindsay Harris of ONUS Training & Consultancy, Professor Sharon Madigan, Head of Performance Nutrition at the Sport Ireland Institute, and athlete Ciara Mageean.
The Women's Winter Running and Walking Workshop was made possible with support from funding from EVAWG Strategic Framework Momentum Funding provided by The Executive Office, Sport NI and the Policing and Community Safety Partnership.
