Council Adopts its Local Development Plan 2030 – Plan Strategy

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council today adopted the Plan Strategy for its new Local Development Plan, a key framework for guiding decisions about how the Borough will grow and develop in a sustainable fashion in the coming years and complement the outcomes of its Community Plan – Love Living Here.

The Plan Strategy, which was formally adopted by Council on Monday 30 June, contains a clear vision promoting Antrim and Newtownabbey as a Place of Economic Opportunity, a Place that is Vibrant and Liveable and a Place with a Sustainable Future.  The document sets out the Council’s ambitions and policies for employment, infrastructure, housing and sustainable growth and follows extensive consultation with residents, businesses and statutory partners.

Speaking at the launch event in Mossley Mill, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick said:

"This is a significant milestone for our Borough. The adoption of the Plan Strategy ensures that our future growth is carefully managed, and that Antrim and Newtownabbey remains a great place to live, work, invest and visit. I want to thank everyone who contributed to this process, including our planning team who were recently crowned Planning Authority of the Year at this year’s prestigious Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Northern Ireland Awards, for Planning Excellence 2025."

Chair of the Planning Committee, Councillor Rosie Kinnear, added;

"This strategy reflects a shared vision for our Borough’s future. It balances development with sustainability and ensures that we are planning responsibly for generations to come. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have across our communities."

The Plan Strategy will be available to view from today, online via https://antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/planstrategy/ and in person at both Mossley Mill and Antrim Civic Centre.
