The Toolkit, now available on the Council’s website serves as a comprehensive guide for community groups, volunteers, professionals, and members of the public. It includes key information on recognising signs of abuse, accessing local support services, and ensuring victims are directed to safe, confidential help. This will allow organisations and individuals to Recognise the signs of abuse, Respond with empathy and Refer to the right support.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick praised the collaborative effort, saying: “This toolkit is a vital resource for our communities. By engaging and empowering individuals with knowledge and support pathways, we are taking a strong stand against domestic and sexual abuse. The partnership between the Council, PSNI and our local PCSP highlights our shared commitment to ensuring safety, dignity and compassion for all residents.”
Superintendent Rosie Thompson of the PSNI echoed the importance of the initiative:
“Tackling domestic and sexual abuse requires a joined-up, community-based approach. This Toolkit will support individuals and groups to better understand how to respond to disclosures of abuse, and how to link victims with the right services at the right time.”
Deputy Mayor and Chair of Antrim and Newtownabbey PCSP, Councillor Julie Gilmour welcomed this partnership project saying: “The PCSP is committed to promoting a safer, more supportive environment for everyone in our Borough. This Toolkit represents the power of partnership working and provides communities with practical tools to help those affected by abuse. Our hope is that it will enable earlier interventions and ensure no one feels that they have to suffer in silence.”
The launch follows extensive consultation with local organisations and service providers, including Women’s Aid, Nexus NI, and other frontline partners, ensuring the Toolkit reflects the lived realities of survivors and those working on the ground.
As part of the wider Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy, the Toolkit marks a significant step in building safer, more informed communities across Antrim and Newtownabbey.
