Newtownabbey Man Jailed for Causing Unnecessary Suffering to Dogs

Jack Graham of Queens Drive, Newtownabbey, was jailed at Laganside Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 24 June 2025 for causing unnecessary suffering to animals and failing to ensure their welfare after charges were brought by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

A total of six dogs were removed from Mr Graham’s property over a period of six months after they were found in unacceptable conditions and suffering from life threatening conditions.

On 24 June 2025, District Judge Fitzsimons sentenced Mr Graham to a 10-month custodial sentence and imposed a disqualification order preventing him from owning animals for the next 15 years under the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011.

All the dogs seized from Mr Graham have fully recovered after veterinary treatment and been rehomed.

A spokesperson for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council commented:

“This was a severe case of animal cruelty as demonstrated by the length of the custodial sentence. Council gives a high priority to the welfare of domestic pets and horses and operates a rigorous enforcement policy to ensure full compliance of regulatory requirements. We hope this case serves as a clear warning to anyone who fails to take appropriate care of their animals."
