Borough Flies the Flag for Commonwealth Day

At 10am this morning, His Majesty’s Vice Lord-Lieutenant for County Antrim, Mrs Miranda Gordon, and the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly, raised the Commonwealth Flag at Antrim Civic Centre to mark Commonwealth Day 2025 and the beginning of a week-long series of events and activities taking place across the globe.

Commonwealth Day 2025 continues to celebrate the values and principles enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter, signed by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 11 March 2013. This year’s theme, ‘Together We Thrive’, celebrates the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth family – 56 independent member Countries across the globe.

In his message, His Majesty King Charles III said, “As we mark this Commonwealth Day together, there is no more important task than to restore the disrupted harmony of our entire planet. For the sake of younger generations’ threatened future, I can only hope that the Commonwealth will continue its vital work to restore that harmony”.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly, said, “As we celebrate Commonwealth Day 2025, we reflect on the unity and shared goals of our global family. It is our responsibility as a Borough to uphold these principles and to recognise the possibilities that arise when nations and people come together with unity and purpose."

To mark the occasion, the Commonwealth Flag was also raised at Mossley Mill, symbolising the Borough’s continued commitment to the values of the Commonwealth.
