‘Safe Shop’ Initiative Launched to Support Local Businesses and Shoppers this Christmas

In partnership with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has launched the ‘Safe Shop’ initiative as part of the Council’s ‘Embrace Your Town This Christmas’ campaign.

The initiative aims to reassure shoppers and support local businesses during the busy festive season, encouraging more people to shop local while helping to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour in town centres.

As part of the programme, Police Officers will focus on shops experiencing higher levels of crime, while Community Safety Wardens and the Council’s Economic Development team will work across local towns to provide guidance, reassurance, and practical support to traders and visitors alike.

Community Safety Wardens will be carrying out additional patrols and business engagement visits, offering safety advice, and signposting support available to local retailers. Shoppers can also expect to see an increased visible presence in town centres, creating a welcoming and safe environment for everyone.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick commented,

“Christmas is a vital time for our local businesses, and we want everyone to feel safe and supported when shopping in our town centres. The Safe Shop initiative sends a clear message that our borough is open, welcoming, and ready to provide a safe and enjoyable shopping experience for all.”

Chair of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Councillor Julie Gilmour added,

“This partnership approach is about prevention, reassurance, and visibility. By working closely with local traders and the PSNI, our Community Safety Wardens will be offering practical advice and support to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, ensuring our town centres remain safe and vibrant places for everyone.”

District Commander, Superintendent Rosemary Thompson said:

“As the Christmas shopping season gets underway, we are reminding the public to stay alert and to take simple precautions to help keep themselves and their property safe. Town centres and shopping destinations become busier at this time of year as expected, which creates opportunities for thieves to strike. Please keep wallets and phones in your front pockets or inside your coat, ensure personal bags are zipped and avoid carrying large amounts of cash around at any time. If driving to make purchases, always lock your vehicle and remove valuables or shopping bags from view. Even a small bag left visible can tempt thieves to break in. We want everyone to enjoy the festive period safely and a few moments of awareness can make all the difference to your shopping experience.”
