Community Relations Forum Honoured with The King’s Award for Voluntary Service

The Community Relations Forum has been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest honour for volunteer-led groups in the United Kingdom, in recognition of its outstanding contribution to building a more inclusive and connected community across the Borough. The award was presented to the group by the Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim, David McCorkell KStJ, during a special event hosted by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council on 27 March at the Linen Suite, Mossley Mill.

Established in 1993, the Community Relations Forum was founded at a time when fostering good relations was essential. Since then, it has provided a safe and trusted space where people from all backgrounds can come together with openness, respect, and understanding. These values continue to underpin its work today.

Central to the Forum’s impact is the Barron Hall, Glengormley originally built in 1884 with a vision of improving the lives of local people. Today, it remains a vibrant, community-led space, rebuilt with resilience and dedication and run by the community for the community. Through this hub, the Forum delivers a wide range of programmes designed to support individuals and strengthen community cohesion.

With nine committee members and 27 volunteers contributing more than 3,000 hours each year, the organisation supports initiatives addressing loneliness, mental health, hate crime, domestic abuse, anti-social behaviour, and social isolation. It also provides training in wellbeing, suicide awareness, bystander intervention, and mindfulness, reflecting a responsive and inclusive approach to community need.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick said: “It is a real privilege to celebrate the Community Relations Forum and to recognise the dedication of its volunteers. Over many years, you have created a welcoming and trusted space where people feel safe, respected, and included. Your work brings people together in a meaningful way and strengthens the sense of community across our Borough.”
