Local Primary Schools Make a Splash with Swimming Success

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Henry Cushinan, visited Antrim Forum to congratulate the children on their progress and to highlight the importance of swimming as an essential life skill.

He commented,

“I am delighted the Council has been able to offer swimming lessons to local primary schools, giving children the opportunity to learn an important life skill. Supported through PEACEPLUS funding, this programme shows how local investment can make a real and lasting difference to young people across our Borough.”

Since April, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has delivered the programme to pupils from 11 schools across the Borough, with lessons taking place at Antrim Forum, Sixmile Leisure Centre and Valley Leisure Centre. Around 330 children have taken part, built confidence and developed essential swimming skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Antrim Forum and Sixmile Leisure Centre are also offering summer swimming courses for children aged five and over, providing opportunities for beginners and for those who would like to further develop their technique and confidence in the water.
