Sensory Kids provides children, young people and individuals with disabilities a safe and secure environment for play, growth, development and learning. The organisation also offers vital parental support and works to raise awareness and understanding of disabilities within the wider community. Its services create inclusive spaces where individuals can participate in sensory stimulation activities that enhance wellbeing and quality of life.
The organisation’s primary beneficiaries include autistic children and young people, adults with disabilities and individuals living with dementia throughout the Borough. Through its programmes, Sensory Kids addresses social isolation and community disconnection by offering a supportive, sensory-appropriate environment where participants can develop new skills and strategies to better navigate everyday life.
In addition to its direct services, Sensory Kids provides emotional support and practical guidance to families, helping to strengthen communication and relationships within the home. The organisation also plays a vital advocacy role, raising awareness of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among schools and professionals, promoting equality and ensuring that individuals with disabilities have a strong voice within the community.
At the heart of Sensory Kids is its volunteer team, made up of individuals of all ages and backgrounds who contribute their time and skills to support the organisation’s work. Volunteers are involved in planning, training and daily delivery, as well as supervising soft play sessions, facilitating sensory room and messy play activities, and engaging with the community to raise awareness of the services offered. Their ongoing commitment has been central to the growth and impact of Sensory Kids across the Borough.
The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick said:
