Ballyclare Earns Its Stars and Stripes as May Fair Turns 270

One of Northern Ireland’s most cherished traditions returns this May as the Ballyclare May Fair celebrates an incredible 270 years of history with a packed programme of events, entertainment and community celebrations from 16–23 May 2026. This year’s milestone festival, hosted by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council and proudly sponsored by the Ulster-Scots Agency, embraces the theme “USA 250”. This recognises the historic connections between Ulster-Scots heritage and America, and the enduring legacy of those links over the past 250 years.

A highlight of the local calendar, the Ballyclare May Fair will once again transform the town into a vibrant hub of music, culture, family fun and tradition. From the iconic Horse Fair on Main Street to live concerts, markets, funfair attractions, sporting competitions and themed family events, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Traditional favourites returning this year include the Mayor’s Opening Parade, the historic Horse Fair, markets, tea dances, funfair amusements, the Ballyeaston Vintage Tractor Gathering and Opening Party with music from local talent Colin Graham, the classic car show and It’s a Knockout.

Music lovers can look forward to a packed entertainment line-up including the Ballyclare Community Concert, Praise in the Square, the May Fair Day Concert, Borough Bands and Ballads, the Downtown Country Roadshow with radio presenter Deputy Dave and live music in local pubs including The Grange Bar and the Sportmans Inn.

The week will round off with the All-American Party in the Park where Six Mile Water Park will come alive with American tribute acts, softball games, inflatables, face painting and themed catering,

To facilitate festival activities, Harrier Way will be closed from Tuesday 12 May at 10.00pm until Saturday 23 May at 11.00pm. Main Street will also close temporarily for the Horse Fair on Tuesday 19 May from 8.30am until 5.00pm.

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, said: “The Ballyclare May Fair is a cornerstone of our calendar and a celebration of everything that makes this town and community so special. This year’s 270th anniversary, alongside the USA 250 theme, gives us a unique opportunity to honour our heritage while bringing people together for a truly memorable week of events.
