To mark the occasion, the Council is offering one FREE bag of peat-free compost to every household visiting a local Household Recycling Centre. From Monday 4 May, and while stocks last, residents who bring items such as garden waste, batteries, scrap metal, wood, or electrical goods for recycling will be eligible to receive a complimentary bag.
Using compost in gardens, allotments, and green spaces helps return valuable organic matter to the soil, improving soil health and supporting efforts to tackle climate change by locking up carbon. The compost, supplied by Natural World Products, is created from food and garden waste collected from residents’ brown bins and Household Recycling Centres, demonstrating the positive impact of effective recycling in the Borough.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, highlighted the importance of the initiative,
“Compost Awareness Week is a fantastic opportunity for residents to see first-hand how their recycling efforts come full circle. By turning food and garden waste into high-quality compost, we are not only reducing waste but also enriching our soils and supporting biodiversity across our Borough. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of this offer and play their part in creating a more sustainable, greener future for Antrim and Newtownabbey.”
Complimentary bags of compost will be available at all five of the Council’s Household Recycling Centres across the Borough, while supplies last.
