Planning Approval Granted for Sports Facility Upgrade at Ballyclare Rugby Football Club

Ballyclare Rugby Football Club has been granted full planning permission for a comprehensive redevelopment of their existing facilities, aimed at increasing capacity and supporting year-round use across multiple sports.

The approved scheme includes the transformation of the existing rugby pitch into a modern 3G multi-sports surface, alongside upgrades to the current hockey pitch, which will be converted into a 2G sand-dressed facility with new floodlighting. A canopy will also be installed over the cricket training area, enabling all-weather practice.

Additional works will include improved floodlighting across the site, new perimeter pathways, enhanced fencing and ball-stop netting, as well as upgraded parking provision, including accessible spaces. The development will also see the installation of ancillary storage and improvements to the overall layout of the grounds.

Chair of the Planning Committee, Councillor Rosie Kinnear, said,

“This is a very welcome decision which will further enhance Ballyclare’s sporting infrastructure. These upgrades will future-proof the club’s facilities and provide high-quality, accessible spaces for a wide range of users across the community.”

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, added,

“This development will make a meaningful difference to both local sport and community wellbeing. By improving facilities and enabling greater year-round participation, it will help support healthier, more active lifestyles across the Borough.”

The planned improvements will strengthen Ballyclare Rugby Club’s position as a key multi-sport hub, supporting rugby, hockey and cricket, while creating new opportunities for clubs, schools and community groups to access modern training and playing facilities.
