Delivered by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, the replacement bridge was funded by the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) through the Environment Challenge Fund.
The bridge forms a key part of the Ballyclare Town Greenway, a growing network of three‑metre‑wide shared pedestrian and cycle paths designed to encourage walking, running and cycling throughout the town.
The Outgoing Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, said,
“Investing in high‑quality active travel routes is essential for supporting healthier lifestyles and improving connectivity across our Borough. This new bridge is a fantastic asset for Ballyclare, creating safer, more accessible links for residents while enhancing the natural beauty of the Greenway. I’m delighted to see this project delivered in partnership with our funding bodies and local stakeholders.”
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said,
“ I am committed to supporting councils deliver on their greenway priorities and this project is a fine example of how partnership working can bring tangible benefits and improve connectivity for local communities.
“The bridge offers a vital link to local amenities, and I hope it will encourage more people to consider walking, wheeling or cycling for their shorter everyday journeys.”
This important addition to Ballyclare’s infrastructure provides a vital link between Ballyclare War Memorial Park, the Sixmile Leisure Centre, and nearby residential areas, improving safe and convenient access to local amenities, schools and shops.
Designed by Colins Rolston, the new structure features distinctive metal fin balustrades, offering views over the Six Mile River and its surrounding natural landscape.
