Council raises Red Ensign to mark Merchant Navy Day

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has raised the Red Ensign flag at Antrim Civic Centre and Mossley Mill to mark Merchant Navy Day, recognising the contribution and sacrifice of merchant seafarers.

The flag was raised by Deputy Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mrs Jenny Lendrum and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Alison Bennington at a short service held at Mossley Mill on Thursday 3 September.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Alison Bennington, commented,

“Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is proud to support Merchant Navy Day and to raise the Red Ensign in recognition of the vital contribution made by merchant seafarers, past and present.

“Today, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country and thank all merchant seafarers, veterans and their families for their courage, dedication and service. The Red Ensign is a lasting symbol of our pride, remembrance and respect.”

The Red Ensign is the official flag of the Merchant Navy and is flown each year on Merchant Navy Day as a symbol of remembrance and recognition.
