Centenary Collection

Centenary Collection is a project that is reaching out to all of the community and asking for special possessions which collectively can tell the story of the last 100 years of our lives by being used to create a ‘Centenary Collection’ exhibition featuring treasured objects, their story and their place in a shared past.

Centenary Collection is a project that is reaching out to all of the community and asking for special possessions which collectively can tell the story of the last 100 years of our lives by being used to create a ‘Centenary Collection’ exhibition featuring treasured objects, their story and their place in a shared past.

Do you have a special object or possession, perhaps handed down through many generations of your family which you might loan to us for the creation of a special Centenary Collection Exhibition to be delivered to audiences across our Borough as part of our collective reflections on a centenary passed?

The objects and possessions can relate to any time period between 1921 and today and could be anything and everything from a painting, a sports medal, a war medal, an ornament or item of clothing, a factory clock in card or an item of print.

Should you have such a possession or object we simply ask you to upload a photograph using the link and complete our electronic luggage tag to tell us the story of your object ad its link to the history of our place. Once restrictions permit we will arrange for drop off or collection of these special objects.

We will be taking receipt of photographic submissions from Monday 29 March until the end of April 2021.  After this time, we hope to take in objects and then collate objects into our ‘Centenary Collection’ which will be available to view across our Council facilities from July to December.  The exhibition will treat the objects with the highest standard of museum conservation and care with robust security and insurance arrangements in place.

We appreciate how precious possessions are and can assure you that our experienced Cultural Services Staff will treat every object with the utmost care and attention, returning all to owners at the end of the year.

A catalogue of the Centenary Collection will be created as part of this project and include the stories told about each object whilst acknowledge the contributors including original owners be they living or passed away.  This catalogue will form a lasting legacy for our future generations to understand who we were in 2021.
