Food Caddy Liners Service Update

Helping Us Reduce Waste and Support Sustainability

To encourage the efficient use of food caddy liners and ensure value for money, the Council is introducing changes to how free caddy liners are provided to households.

By promoting responsible use and reducing unnecessary consumption, this approach will help minimise waste, maintain availability of liners and support the long-term effectiveness of the food waste collection service.

What You Need to Know

• How many caddy liners will I receive?

  Each household will receive two free rolls of food caddy liners per year, delivered directly to their home by the brown bin collection crews.

  This year, deliveries will take place at the following times:

  • One roll (30 liners) during July/August
  • One roll (30 liners) at the start of December

  Additional liners can be collected free of charge from designated Council facilities.

  Two rolls are provided because caddy liners are just one part of the overall waste collection service. Delivering two free rolls per year is based on average household usage and helps balance value for money with maintaining a reliable and consistent service for all residents.

  Residents who require additional liners can continue to collect them from designated collection points.

• How will my liners be delivered?

  Food caddy liners will be delivered by brown bin collection crews during designated delivery periods.

  To ensure you receive your liners, please present your brown bin for collection during the notified delivery week, regardless of how full it is.

• I didn't receive my liners. What should I do?

  If you do not receive your roll during the delivery period, contact the Waste Management Team within two weeks of the delivery date to arrange delivery.

  After this period, liners can be collected from:

  • Mossley Mill
  • Antrim Civic Centre
  • Clotworthy House
  • All Leisure Centres
  • Household Recycling Centres

  Please note: Collections are limited to two rolls per household, per visit.

• Where can I collect extra caddy liners?

  Additional liners are available from:

  • Mossley Mill
  • Antrim Civic Centre
  • Clotworthy House
  • All Leisure Centres
  • Household Recycling Centres

  Collection limit: Two rolls per household, per visit.

• I have an assisted lift service. How can I get additional liners?

  Residents approved for an assisted lift service who are unable to collect liners can contact the Waste Management Team to arrange delivery.

• I didn't receive my liners. What should I do?

  If you do not receive your roll during the delivery period, contact the Waste Management Team within two weeks of the delivery date to arrange delivery.

• How should I store my liners?

  Store liners in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to help prevent deterioration.

• I am new to the area. Can I receive liners?

  Yes. New residents who have not yet received an allocation should contact the Council to arrange access to liners.

• How does reducing liner use support sustainability?

  Reducing unnecessary liner consumption helps:

  • Lower resource use
  • Reduce production and disposal impacts
  • Minimise waste
  • Improve value for money
  • Support the Council's sustainability objectives
• Will the Council review this service?

  Yes. The Council will continue to monitor and review caddy liner provision as part of ongoing service development.

Buying Your Own Liners

• Where can I collect extra caddy liners?

  Where can I buy compostable liners?

  Compostable caddy liners are widely available from supermarkets and other retailers.

  When purchasing liners, please ensure they display the Seedling logo, confirming they are certified compostable and suitable for food waste collections.  

  Please do not use:

  • Plastic liners
  • Non-compostable liners

  These materials are not accepted through the food waste collection service.

• What can I use instead of compostable liners?

  You do not have to use compostable liners. Alternative options include:

  • Lining your caddy with newspaper
  • Using kitchen roll
  • Placing food waste directly into your food caddy or brown bin

  All of these options are accepted.

Food Waste Collection

• What can go into my food waste caddy?

  Accepted food waste includes:

  ✅ Fruit and vegetables
  ✅ Meat and fish (raw or cooked)
  ✅ Dairy products
  ✅ Bread, rice, pasta and grains
  ✅ Other food waste

• What cannot go into my food waste caddy?

  ❌ Plastic
  ❌ Glass
  ❌ Metal

• What happens if my bin is contaminated?

  If unacceptable materials are found in your food waste bin:

  • The bin will not be collected
  • A contamination tag will be attached explaining the issue

  The contamination must be removed before the next scheduled collection.

Commercial Premises

• Will businesses receive free caddy liners?

  No. Commercial premises are responsible for purchasing their own liners, either from the Council or an alternative supplier.

• Where can I collect dog waste bags?

  Dog waste bags are available from:

  • Mossley Mill
  • Antrim Civic Centre

Food Waste Trial Areas

• Will households in food waste trial areas receive additional liners?

  Yes. Households participating in food waste trial areas will continue to receive additional liners as part of the trial arrangements.
