Supporting New and Expecting Mums

Supporting New and Expecting Mums

Did you know that more than 1 in 10 women experience mental health challenges during or within a year of pregnancy? At Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, we understand the importance of community, activity, and wellbeing for new mums. That’s why we’ve launched Mums on the Move—a walking programme designed for mums-to-be and mums with babies up to 18 months old.

This initiative provides a welcoming space where you can meet other mums, enjoy gentle exercise, and focus on your mental wellbeing. Many women experience isolation and loneliness during this period, and we are here to support you and your family through this transition.

Walking Groups

The first Mums on the Move sessions took place in Antrim and Newtownabbey during October and November 2024, where 20 mums met at Antrim Castle Gardens and The Valley for three walking sessions in each location. These sessions helped participants form friendships, stay active, and build support networks—many even continued to stay in touch through group chats!

The next sessions of Mums on the Move Walking Group will take place in Ballyclare.
Meeting Point: Avondale Drive end of Harrier Way Carpark at 9.45am
Dates: 14, 21 and 28 March 2025

If you're interested in joining, E. envhealth@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk providing your name, phone number and postcode to register.

Future sessions of the Mums on the Move walking group will take place in Randalstown in April, with dates to be confirmed.

We hope that you and your babies will join us this Spring as we help build new communities and support networks for parents!

Winter Wellness Event

On 14 February 2025 we welcomed 25 mums and babies to the Mums on the Move Winter Wellness Event at Mossley Mill. Guests heard from experts about perfectionism in parenting, staying active in the post-partum period and Chair Yoga before enjoying a nutritious lunch.
