Since non-fatal strangulation became a standalone criminal offence in Northern Ireland in June 2023, its prevalence has become increasingly clear.

More than 2,300 arrests have been made by the PSNI, with around 250 convictions recorded to date. These figures highlight the serious and widespread nature of an offence that is often used to control, intimidate or instil fear in victims, and which carries a significant risk of serious harm or death.

Non-fatal strangulation typically involves intentionally restricting a person’s ability to breathe, even where there are no visible injuries. Understanding the offence, the risks involved and the support available is vital for victims, professionals and the wider public.

Violence against women and girls is a systemic and deep-rooted problem in our society. It is a problem that is hidden in plain sight and every day we see how it is affecting the lives of women and girls, wherever they learn, live, and work.

Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) is a seven year programme mandated by the Northern Ireland Executive which will address the whole range of gender-based violence, abuse and harm which is disproportionately experienced by women and girls, and which is rooted in gender inequality.

There is something everyone can do. Let’s get started.
