The Butterfly Effect: Transformation Through Volunteering

The Butterfly Effect: Transformation Through Volunteering

The Spirit of Volunteering Awards 2026 draw inspiration from the butterfly, reflecting this year’s theme, “Transformation through Volunteering”. Echoing the butterfly’s journey from quiet beginnings, through growth and change, to emergence and flight, the awards celebrate the evolving story of volunteering and the lasting difference it creates.

Across the Borough of Antrim and Newtownabbey, volunteers help communities grow stronger and more connected, showing how transformation can spread far beyond its starting point, just like the butterfly effect, through everyday actions that support and strengthen community life.

Nominations are open from 5 May until 8 June.

Mayor's Foreward

I am delighted to Champion the Antrim and Newtownabbey Spirit of Volunteering Awards 2026, an initiative that recognises the hard work, dedication, and quiet determination of the Borough’s unsung heroes.

Travelling across our Borough daily, I continue to witness at first-hand the extraordinary and selfless acts carried out by individuals and groups who give their time freely to improve the lives of others. Often, this work goes unseen and unrecognised, yet its impact is felt in every corner of our communities.

This year, we are proud to introduce a new theme for the awards: “Transformation through Volunteering”. This theme uses the butterfly metaphor to beautifully capture the journey, growth, and lasting impact of volunteering.

At the beginning of every volunteer’s journey is the caterpillar – the stage where small acts of kindness and commitment first take root. Like the caterpillar emerging from a tiny egg, volunteers often begin with something simple: a desire to help, a few hours of service, or small acts of kindness. While they may appear ordinary, they hold extraordinary potential. Over time, through experience and commitment, they learn, develop, and grow in confidence and capability.

Then comes the chrysalis – the quiet, unseen transformation. This is the stage where the most profound change often happens, though it is not always visible. Volunteers give their time in ways that are not always seen by others, through mentoring conversations, evening training sessions, late-night administrative work and quiet moments of emotional support for those in need. In these spaces, character is strengthened, purpose is deepened and skills are refined.

Finally, there is the emergence of the butterfly – the impact. With wings unfolded, it takes flight and brings colour, life and renewal wherever it goes. In the same way, volunteers emerge from their journey of growth to make a powerful difference in the world around them. They inspire others to get involved, bring vitality and life to their communities and often become leaders and changemakers in their own right. Their transformation extends far beyond themselves, it creates a lasting, collective impact.

Like the butterfly, a volunteer may never fully see the beauty of their own wings in flight, nor truly grasp the scale of the difference they make but we do. We see it in stronger communities, in lives changed and in hope restored. They are the wings of our Borough.

As Mayor, I am once again looking forward to hearing about the incredible individuals and groups who contribute so much across our Borough. If you know a volunteer or group who reflects this butterfly journey of transformation through their service and impact, I would encourage you to complete a nomination form and ensure they receive the recognition they so richly deserve.

Let us celebrate them. Let us recognise their journey and let us honour the transformation they bring to all our lives.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkptrick
