Macedon DEA

This urban DEA includes the electoral wards of:  Abbey, Carnmoney Hill, O’Neill, Rathcoole, Valley and Whitehouse.  The area’s assets include Carnmoney Hill, V36 Park, part of the Newtownabbey Way and the Valley Leisure Centre which provides opportunities for the more active resident.  Within this DEA is the large out of town shopping centre, Abbeycentre and surrounding retail units, towards the Shore Road, Whiteabbey Hospital provides a range of non-acute services, Northern Regional Colleges main campus and the hidden gem of the Whitehouse Visitor Centre can be found.  Madedon DEA is the gateway to the Causeway Coastal route.

• 14% of the population of the Borough live in this DEA, in 8,708 households.
• There was a 5% population growth in this area over the 10 years 2004-2014.
• Over a quarter of the areas inhabitants own their own home outright, 25.2%.
• The DEA has the lowest number (29%) of households having dependent children, and the highest number of households (15%) with lone pensioners.
• 74% of the population of this DEA are in very good/good health but 8.7% have a chronic illness.
• 7.2% of residents in this area have an emotional/psychological or mental health condition.

• The Valley Park Run is a 5k volunteer led run which takes place every Saturday morning, is FREEand is suitable for all ages and levels.  
• Gideons Green offers some great bird watching opportunities over the Whitehouse Lagoon and you can walk or cycle from Gideons Green into Belfast on the National Cycle Way.
• The White House has nestled on the Northern Shore of Belfast Lough for over 400 years and has now been restored into a beautiful visitor centre and multi-purpose space.  
• 35% of people who live here have no qualifications (2011).
• 35.1% are economically inactive (not seeking employment).
• There were 39 Invest NI Start ups (10 in Whitehouse) 2015/2015, which highlights this as the most entrepreneurial DEA in the Borough
