Sports Awards 2019

We are delighted to announce the Sports Awards will be returning to Theatre at The Mill on 14 November this year. The categories this year are:

  • Services to Sport*
    • Awarded to an individual who has made a significant contribution to sport within the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council area. This award is open to referees, umpires, club officers, groundsmen etc. who have made a significant impact to the development of sport, performers, a club or community within the Council area.*
  • Club of the Year*
    • Awarded to a club within the Borough which has made a noteworthy contribution to its sport over the last year. This contribution may take the form of team results, recruitment of members or the development of club structures and functions to meet the needs of existing and new members.*
  • Coach of the Year*
    • This award recognises the contribution of a coach/manager to sporting achievement within the Borough. This award is open to any governing body registered coach/manager who coaches either within the Borough or at a representative level and has worked to develop outstanding athletic performance over a number of years.*
  • Adult Sports Person of the Year*
    • This award recognises an individual with an outstanding individual performance and is open to males and females who were over the age of eighteen on 1 January 2017. Nominated individuals must reside in or have resided in the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council area.*
  • The Jonathan Rea MBE Junior Sports Person of the Year
    • This award has been gifted by Jonathan Rea, MBE and Professional Motorbike racer. This award recognises an individual with an outstanding individual performance and is open to both males and females who were under the age of eighteen during the period of 1 January 2017 to 31 August 2019. Nominated individuals must reside in the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council area.
  • Junior Team of the Year
    • Awarded to a club within the Borough which has made a noteworthy contribution to its sport over the last year.  The majority of the team membership must be under the age of 18 during the period of 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2019. The contribution may take the form of team results, recruitment of members or the development of club structures and functions to meet the needs of existing and new members.
  • Senior Team of the Year
    • To recognise the success of a team which has made a noteworthy contribution to its sport over the last year. This award will be open to both male and female teams over the age of 18 on 1st January 2017.  Achievements must have been completed with the last two years.  The contribution may take the form of team results, recruitment of members or the development of club structures and functions to meet the needs of existing and new members.  Nominated clubs must be from within the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council area.
  • Sports Person of the Year with a Disability
    • Awarded to an individual with a physical or learning disability who has had a successful year of competition. This award is open to both male and female individuals who reside in the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council area.
  • Janet Parkinson Award
  • Roll of Honor
    • A Posthumous award which recognises individuals who have made a significant impact in the development of sport, performers, a club or community. Nominees must have resided in or had a significant association with the Borough.

*  It is the wish of the Sports Awards Committee to showcase the undoubted range of sporting talent in Antrim and Newtownabbey. An individual will not be considered in this category if they have not been successful within this category in the last 4 years unless exceptional circumstances of sporting excellence are demonstrated.
