Walking

Walking is one of the simplest, safest and most effective form of physical activity. Every adult in Northern Ireland should accumulate 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week.

Walk this way

The Borough of Antrim & Newtownabbey is an ideal area to explore on foot. Steeped in folklore and set in tranquil countryside, the walking routes allow you to explore the rich natural and cultural heritage the Borough has to offer.
For further information on these and other local walks log on to: www.walkni.com. ‘Walk NI’ is a definitive guide to walking in Northern Ireland, providing information on walks for both the serious rambler and those who enjoy a short stroll.

Carnmoney Hill

Carnmoney Hill is one of a chain of hills, steeped in history and biodiversity, which watch over Belfast.  This woodland Trust managed site has recently been designated a Local Nature Reserve, which celebrates the value of this site for both people and wildlife.  Walking trails through the site are available for all abilities, with some leading to the summit for spectacular views of Belfast Lough and beyond.  While enjoying the walks, visitors will also experience ancient woodland, mature hedgerows, wetlands and open water and, if you are quiet, the wildlife these habitats support!

Monkstown Wood

Monkstown Wood is a Woodland Trust owned site which consists of a linear path through a range of habitats including a river corridor, hedgerows, semi-natural woodland and open spaces.  This area is a gentle walk suitable for people of all abilities and the range of habitats will allow the visitor to appreciate the importance of natural open space within this densely populated area.  The range of habitats also provide an important resource and great transport corridor for our local wildlife.

The Newtownabbey Way

The Newtownabbey Way (part of the National Cycle Network Route 93) is approximately a 6.7 mile or 10.75km walking and cycling route connecting Mossley Mill with the historic villages of Monkstown and Whiteabbey, along the shores of Belfast Lough to Belfast’s oldest building, The White House.
